ABA Bank bolsters digital leadership in Cambodia with advanced microservices and AI

Upgrading its microservices-based DevOps container architecture in two ways has achieved 99.999% availability, 50% faster deployments, and 15% lower container costs.

As the first bank in Cambodia to introduce online and mobile banking services, Advanced Bank of Asia (ABA Bank) has consistently led the country’s digital finance evolution.

Having transitioned from a legacy monolithic system to a new microservices-based architecture, the bank is constantly modernizing its infrastructure.

On 16 April 2025, the bank was announced to have deepened its partnership with an existing tech vendor of open source enterprise-grade solutions to achieve 99.999% service availability for all customer-facing and critical applications. It has also cut application deployment time by half, and reduced container management costs by 15%.

The upgrade consists of two solutions:

  1. The adoption of an open source Kubernetes management platform: This has empowered ABA Bank’s developers and operation teams to build, update, deploy, and manage containerized workloads across cloud and on-premises environments from a single pane of glass. The upgrade has been said to have drastically improved g agility and visibility, automated key processes such as deployment and monitoring, and significantly improved operational efficiency to roll out new applications 50% faster. Container management costs have been reduced by up to 15%, freeing up resources to reinvest in innovation and customer experience enhancements.
  2. The upgrade of Kubernetes cybersecurity in its new microservices environment with a solution to strengthen defenses against evolving cyber threats and ensure ongoing compliance with Cambodia’s financial regulations. With the upgrade, bank’s DevOps teams can now detect vulnerabilities in real time, and respond with rapid remediation to safeguard both customer data and the institution’s reputation.

The bank’s Head of DevOps, Men Phalla, said: “Delivering fast, secure, and uninterrupted banking services is key to maintaining our leadership position in Cambodia’s financial sector… we’ve gained the agility and visibility to innovate confidently… (and the upgrade) gives us real-time insights to mitigate risks before they escalate.”

According to Gayathri Peria, General Manager, SUSE (ASEAN), the incumbent tech partner for the system upgrades: “We are proud to support innovative institutions like ABA Bank in their digital transformation journey in the dynamic South-east Asian market of Cambodia…  to deliver exceptional customer experiences with confidence and support greater financial inclusion.”
