Green SM (Laos) integrates mobile wallet to fix ride-hailing payment delays, cash flow issues

A recent digital transformation now streamlines fares, secures transactions, and automates driver earnings via APIs and QR interoperability

In Laos, urban mobility operator Green SM has expanded electric ride-hailing and transport services across Vientiane, but it had faced persistent friction in payment processing and driver cash flow management.

Prior to 2026, transactions often relied on manual bank transfers or cash, creating reconciliation delays, limited payment flexibility, and operational inefficiencies for both drivers and passengers. As usage increased, the company required a more integrated digital payment layer to support scale and reduce dependency on manual processes.

On 24 April 2026, the firm announced a digital transformation initiative focused on embedding mobile wallet functionality into its ride-hailing platform. The objective was to streamline fare collection, improve transaction security, and extend financial services to drivers within its network. The digital transformation implementation centered on:

  • Embedded wallet integration enabling in-app, real-time fare payments without external transfers
  • QR-based payment interoperability allowing transactions through linked banking applications
  • Automated transaction processing to eliminate manual reconciliation and reduce settlement delays
  • Driver-focused financial tools including digital wallets for income disbursement, expense payments, and cash flow tracking
  • API-based service integration connecting mobility services with payment infrastructure for cross-platform access

This shift replaced fragmented payment methods with a unified digital workflow, allowing passengers to complete trips with automatic fare deduction while giving drivers faster access to earnings. It also created a foundation for additional digital services within the same application environment.

The firm’s Director of Mobility Services Sales (Vietnam & Laos), Tran Hanh An, said the digitalization initiative aims to connect “expand benefits for our customers and driver community while driving meaningful green transformation that is firmly grounded in everyday mobility and consumption needs.”

According to Ha Chien Thang, Director, Star Fintech Sole Co., the operator of the Umoney platform in Laos adopted by Green MS: “The integration of payment capabilities and digital services not only enhances user convenience but also contributes to the advancement of cashless payments and the broader digital transformation of the economy.”
