Meizu smart glasses incorporate real-world e-wallet payment network in Hong Kong

Touted as a world-first proof-of-concept, the tech debut is expected to be rolled out to global e-wallet partners this year.

On 19 June 2025, an innovation in wearable technology unfolded in Hong Kong with the completion of what is claimed as the world’ – Case Ss first real-world e-wallet payment transaction using smart glasses from Meizu.

The transaction signals a leap forward in how consumers can interact with digital payments in physical environments. Users can now make payments simply by scanning QR codes or issuing voice commands through their smart glasses, eliminating the need to reach for a phone or card.

This innovation is underpinned by a suite of advanced technologies:

  • The glasses utilize optical waveguide displays for clear, heads-up information, voice noise reduction and capture for accurate command recognition, and camera-based code scanning for seamless QR payments.
  • The integration of AI-powered voice interfaces, intent recognition, and voiceprint authentication offers both convenience and security, allowing users to confirm transactions hands-free and screen-free.
  • The payment process is streamlined to the point where a simple voice command can trigger and confirm a payment, offering a glimpse into a future where wearable devices may replace smartphones as the primary personal tech for transactions.

For beneficiaries of this innovation, such as well-heeled tech enchanted consumers in Hong Kong, the technology offers a frictionless payment experience that could be especially valuable in fast-paced, high-density urban settings:

  • Merchants can benefit from reduced transaction times and the ability to serve customers who prefer not to use physical wallets or phones.
  • The technology’s modularity means that, as it is adopted by more e-wallet providers, its reach could quickly expand across markets and industries.

Said Peng Guo, General Manager (XR Division), Meizu: “The innovation in the payment scenario has enhanced the practicality and appeal of smart glasses, and has promoted the progress and development of the AR glasses industry. We hope this function will bring more convenient experiences to users.”

The underlying platform, developed by Alipay+, will roll out to global e-wallet partners in 2025, enabling a wider ecosystem to access these capabilities through a single integration.

According to Jiangming Yang, Chief Innovation Officer, Ant International: “By unlocking payment capabilities, smart glasses will rapidly transform into the next-gen personal device like the mobile phone.”
